Studio ZwartFrame

The three makers Emilio Timp, Jeroen van Veluw and Bart Schalekamp from Studio ZwartFrame share a fascination for physical processes and material research. They develop new production processes in their studio and find unconventional applications for materials. With “Conflict” they investigate materials that expand due to temperature changes. Almost every material expands as it gets warmer and starts shrinking as the temperature drops. By combining materials with different properties under specific conditions, they create objects that form themselves. At eighty degrees below zero they attach flexible thin plates to metal, after which they allow it to reach room temperature. While warming up, the material starts to expand and to slowly form itself, creating a new, light but also sturdy sheet material.
