HOW&WOW Linen talks – Studio Plastique and Saar Scheerlings

Crafts Council Nederland presents ‘HOW&WOW Linen talks’: a series of talks with participating designers and cooperation partners. They present their work and give insight in their process, explorations, questions and results.

Studio Plastique is based in Brussels; Theresa Bastek and Archibald Godts relocated there after completing their studies at the Design Academy Eindhoven. Studio Plastique came into contact with flax in 2018. ‘We participated in an exhibition in Northern Ireland that explored new contemporary applications for flax. Just like over here most people don’t know that much about it anymore, but luckily flax is being rediscovered, being a sustainable product with many applications. For HOW&WOW Linen Studio Plastique is continuing their research with a focus on hygiene; a very relevant topic in these times.

Saar Scheerlings studied at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. Scheerlings works from intrinsic motivation and personal fascination. Textile, craft and diversity in material and construction are the common denominators in her work. Scheerlings is obsessed with crafts within traditional regional costumes. These days regional costume is generally seen in museums, without a body. The literal absence of the body reminded Scheerlings of ghosts. ‘I developed this image into three sculptures; human-like figures, bodiless, with only a shell.’ The sculptures originated from the craft of bonnet mounting; starching, pleating and folding fabric in the manner typically used in various regional costumes of the Netherlands. For this project, Scheerlings worked together with Jankees Goud, expert within traditional regional costumes.
