Under the title BASK IT! we focused on the technique of weaving in 2021. With BASK IT!—literally translated as “cherish it!”—we immersed you in the world of basketry and explored the many aspects of three-dimensional weaving: its unique properties, possibilities, new applications and also its social and cultural context.
Basketry is practiced all over the world and is one of the oldest techniques developed by humans, with traces of woven work found in everyday objects, architecture, textiles and ropes. What is remarkable about this technique is that it does not require a loom. It is a three-dimensional construction technique where the maker uses both hands and only a few tools to create a form. The craft has evolved over time, along with its significance.
We entered into a special collaboration with designer and co-founder of the Basketclub, Adrianus Kundert. We joined forces to bring together makers, experts, companies, museums, educational institutions and enthusiasts to explore the scope and artistic possibilities of basketry within a Community of Practice. We organized lectures, expert meetings, masterclasses, Meet the Master events, HOW&WOW BASK IT! and more.
BASK IT! was financially supported by the Creative Industries Fund NL and the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds.
