Meet the Master
Following the successful masterclasses during Dutch Design Week 2013, Etsy, Crafts Council Nederland and Fonds voor Cultuurparticipatie in collaboration with the Center for Folklore and Intangible Heritage, present Meet the Master. Meet the Master is a series of masterclasses that can be attended during Dutch Design Week 2014 (October 18–26, 2014).
For nine days, one masterclass was offered each day, led by an absolute authority in the field of creative craftsmanship. Under the guidance of these ‘Masters,’ participants could delve into a specific artisanal technique. The artisans leading the masterclasses were all experts in their respective fields. For one day, they brought their workshops to Dutch Design Week. By passing on these techniques, craftsmanship was kept alive. Artisanal techniques served as a source of knowledge and inspiration and were often employed in innovative applications. Learning such a technique enhanced personal creative freedom and opened doors to new business opportunities.
The masterclasses include: laminating and working with wood by Jop van Driel, painting Delftware by Wilma Plaisier, Staphorst stipwerk (traditional dot painting) by Gerard van Oosten, papermaking with Dutch raw materials by Marieke de Hoop, gold embroidery by Margreet Beemsterboer, designing stained glass by Sibylle Gielen, hat-making by Jackie Habets, weaving by Esmée Hofman and felting by Beatrice Waanders.
