Meet the Maker: Nikkie Wester
‘My name is Nikkie Wester, I am a textile and ‘Future Heritage’ designer from Amsterdam. I mainly work in commission for companies, institutions of private customers. I make custom designs and I also advice companies in cultural heritage management. My qualities are conceptual thinking, textile innovation, art direction and organization. Five years ago I worked on a project commissioned by Droog Design in Africa; the cultural center CACAU on the island of São Tomé had to be redecorated. I designed the curtains and wanted to make these with the locals. The weaving technique had entirely disappeared on the island so I taught the local makers this skill. They started working on it and now the project is nearly finished. I went back regularly to support them, but now my wish is to have the project running independently on the island.’
