Meet the Maker: Christien Meindertsma
‘My name is Christien Meindertsma. I want to know how a product comes into being, from the material to end product, and how it relates to its surroundings and the world. On the Design Academy Eindhoven I was not taught about the origins of products, but I was challenged in many different ways that I had to find my own path. For my project ‘one sheep sweater’ I used the wool from one single sheep for one single sweater. It was a revelation that there was so much more involved than just the wool; it is a production chain with everything related to it. That is were I dived in deeper. It is a way of working that really suits me.’
What can Crafts Council do for you?
’Of course it is great that makers are more easily found. It is important that makers and designers get to know each other, but maybe even more important is good commissioning. There is still too little attention for that, if you ask me; a clear well request or commission that acts as a starting point of conversation, good financial agreements that helps designers, because there are so many things you do not know.’
