A photo report of the official kick-off of the European Year of Cultural Heritage

We look back on a successful official kick-off of the European Year of Cultural Heritage at Het Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam. In 2018, a particular heritage theme will be highlighted each month. In January that theme was ‘Creativity from tradition’. And in that context Crafts Council Nederland presented the exhibition De Ambachtsman als Ontdekkingsreiziger (The Craftsman as an Explorer). Photo credit: Felix Kalkman, unless stated otherwise.

With Bernard Heesen, Gerard van Oosten, Gino Anthonisse, Jan Hovens, Linda Valkeman, Marjolein Grotenhuis, Roos Meerman, Seungbin Yang, Tim van Lier, Wilma Plaisier, Zuheir Alkazzaz.

The European Year of Cultural Heritage began with an expert meeting in which a number of inspiring speakers such as Itie van Hout, Mina Abouzahra, Maartje Brattinga, Esmé Hofman, Thijs Adriaans and Sophie Kiesouw explained what tradition, innovation and craftsmanship mean to them.

Together with the speakers, moderator Hedwig Saam formulated answers to a number of questions as’ what value lays in our heritage ‘,’ what influence does tradition have on our customs and habits’ and ‘how do designers use these values and influences in their own work? ‘.
