A photo report of the official kick-off of the European Year of Cultural Heritage
We look back on a successful official kick-off of the European Year of Cultural Heritage at Het Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam. In 2018, a particular heritage theme will be highlighted each month. In January that theme was ‘Creativity from tradition’. And in that context Crafts Council Nederland presented the exhibition De Ambachtsman als Ontdekkingsreiziger (The Craftsman as an Explorer). The European Year of Cultural Heritage began with an expert meeting in which a number of inspiring speakers such as Itie van Hout, Mina Abouzahra, Maartje Brattinga, Esmé Hofman, Thijs Adriaans and Sophie Kiesouw explained what tradition, innovation and craftsmanship mean to them.
Together with the speakers, moderator Hedwig Saam formulated answers to a number of questions as’ what value lays in our heritage ‘,’ what influence does tradition have on our customs and habits’ and ‘how do designers use these values and influences in their own work? ‘.
Welcome and introduction by Mirjam Blott (project leader European Heritage Year Netherlands) and Marion Poortvliet (founder Crafts Council Netherlands). Simone Kukenheim (alderman of Amsterdam) and Barbera Wolfensberger (Director-General of Culture and Media) about the importance and preservation of cultures and crafts.
