Participation in international conference ‘The power of crafts’

Crafts are important, not only for the economy but also for the culture of a country. UNESCO describes the craft as the most tangible expression of intangible heritage. Instead of preserving craft products, however, UNESCO focuses on the craft itself, on the transmission of skills and knowledge related to the exercise of the craft. The point is that craft people are empowered in all their creativity to be able to continue to exercise their craft and it that can provide for their own livelihood.

The conference was about what municipalities and provinces can do to create a favorable climate in which trade can prosper economically. The sector has many small companies which all together handle about 111 billion euros. Only an integrated approach in which all parties work together, can lead to lasting success.

Crafts Council Nederland was represented in various roles: chair of CCNL, Arjo Klamer, gave an inspiring lecture on the craft economy. Willemien Ippel took part in the discussion panel about craft economy and Marion Poortvliet took part in the panel discussion on education and innovation.
