Since 2018, flax has been cultivated under the name The Linen Project. Linen is made from flax. The production of linen, which was, until 1900, one of the most commonly used materials for textile production alongside wool, requires a great deal of knowledge and skill in both sowing, harvesting, and processing. The Linen Project follows the concept of “learning by doing” and therefore established “shared stewardship”: a group of about 30 people (stewards) who are responsible for the entire process of hand-made linen production. Together, they go through all the steps of flax cultivation, from seed to thread to product.
The Linen Project brings together heritage, education, agriculture, design, craftsmanship and economy. The project also explores, together with partners from the industry, how the mechanical linen chain can be reshaped. In 2024, over 800 participants joined ‘1m2 vlas’, where people across the Netherlands grew their own square meter of flax in their gardens. In 2025, it will be possible to participate again.
Consumers frequently purchase cheap(er) products that are often of poor quality, produced under poor working conditions, and have a huge impact on our environment. With various activities, The Linen Project aims to develop more insight and appreciation for textiles and raise awareness about the fashion system.
