Jansen / Engelgeer: Heritage / Revival

Last fall, Mae Engelgeer and CCNL came in contact with Jos Jansen, the owner of a weaving studio in Ruurlo. Ruurlo is a small village in the eastern part of the Netherlands. What we found there was like a treasure, especially for a textile designer. An old barn with big looms, an attic with lots of beautiful coloured wool in various thickness and quality. Boxes full of colour swatches and combinations, a full archive of hand woven samples, giving us an idea of the rugs that were made in the past. For the last 40 years Jansen has been weaving rugs and sold them to high end interior stores or private clients. The craftsmanship is visible in every part of Jos Jansens rugs, he was taught by his father, who learnt form his and so on. With this archive in mind and enough yarns to finish, Mae Engelgeer started to create small woven samples in which she plays with colours, referring back to this heritage. This assay is shown during HOW&WOW. In the end we hope to create at least ten unique pieces in big size. To be continued! This is a project in collaboration with Craft Council Nederland, and the process is followed by photographer Iris Duvekot. By courtesy of Bertie van Keulen.
